Mediators Profile

John has been in practice at the Bar since 1980, and as a silk since 1995. He has a broad civil practice, predominantly in the commercial and chancery fields, coupled with some Administrative Court work (generally with a commercial background). His experience includes a substantial number of professional negligence cases linked to these fields, and many disputes concerning shareholdings in and directorships of companies. He regularly acts for a number of the nation’s leading property developers and house builders.

John was Deputy Head and then Head of Chambers between 1998 and 2004.

What does John bring to the table?

Very substantial experience of analysing and resolving weighty commercial disputes. John often acts for clients whose priority is achieving an effective and acceptable commercial solution rather than establishing their strict legal rights at a trial.

Judicial experience gained sitting as a Deputy High Court Judge and as a Recorder for over 16 years (to January 2016). John became accredited as a mediator in 2009.

John combines a reputation for intellectual rigour with a friendly, easy-going manner, as the entries about him in Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession over a number of years (consistently listing him as the leading silk in the Midlands for Commercial Dispute Resolution and for Chancery) testify.

What does John want to achieve through the ADR process?

Having acted for clients in a number of mediations and other ADR processes, and been approached several times about the possibility of conducting them himself, John trained as a mediator in 2009. He offers the combination of the wealth of knowledge and experience described above with an understanding of the practical operation and relative advantages of both mediation and a variety of other methods for resolving commercial disputes.
