Mediators Profile

Sophie is a member of St Philips Business and Property ADR Group and is a practising commercial Mediator dealing with the usual range of contractual and commercial cases, but she is also unique amongst St Philips Business and Property Mediators in having an additional qualification in Workplace Mediation (Globis, 2011).  This has equipped her to handle intra-organisational disputes where relations have broken down but litigation is still in the background. She is therefore able to mediate across all types of dispute where there has been a breakdown of working relationships, from the boardroom to the shop floor, or involving grievances or allegations of whistleblowing, harassment or discrimination by employees, senior executives or directors.

Qualifications:

• ACIS (2002)
• Accredited Commercial Mediator: CEDR (2000), ADR Group (2009)
• Accredited Workplace Mediator, Globis (2011)

Sophie also acts as a mediation advocate. Recent disputes mediated have included:

  • Workplace mediation between two senior local authority employees embroiled in an on going dispute with grievances and counter-grievances
  • Mediation between senior manager and former employer on the settlement of a high court employment dispute.

Sophie accepts instructions directly from members or the public/corporate organisations under the Bar’s Public Access Scheme.

Sophie is described by the Legal 500 as someone who is “technically strong and client friendly” with the ability to “get the grips with the detail of a difficult issue” These qualities derive from her careful and accurate listening skills and her ability to master even complex or protracted factual information, which she can then present with clarity to clients or to courts and tribunals.  She is also described as someone who “wins the trust and respect of clients”.

Sophie has the skills and experience necessary to give sound strategic and tactical advice to clients in commercial employment disputes.

Her commercial practice covers restraint of trade and directorial disputes, and she uses her additional knowledge of corporate structure and governance – gained via her ACIS professional company secretarial qualification – to help disentangle the governance disputes between directors/trustees and senior executive employees that can often lead to conflict in both corporate and voluntary sector organisations.

Sophie’s commercial practice also extends to discrimination claims in the civil courts, with experience of cases involving discrimination in the provision of goods and services, education, and clubs and associations.

She lectures both in-house and externally on employment and discrimination law and she regularly writes articles for websites and other publications on employment law related matters.  In November 2016 she appeared on Radio 4.s ‘You and Yours’ programme on Radio 4 providing expert comment upon discrimination in the provision of goods and services, and in 2012 gave evidence to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Women in the Workplace.
